Thy kingdom come on earth!
Christopher Rowland
Before we get carried away about how to celebrate the end of a millennium, should we not have a closer look at chapter twenty of the Book of Revelation which describes the coming of the millennium? Christopher Rowland examines this passage and finds that 'far from the world enjoying a celebration to mark the millennium, it stands under the judgement of God'.

Rebuilding our human communities

Reconciliation and the millenium

With this Advent the Church begins the preparation for the Jubilee Year 2000. Here, Brian Davies, educational consultant for CAFOD, looks at the biblical background to reconciliation and suggests some ways we may put it into practice.

Canon Michael Richards, past president of the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain and former editor of The Clery Review, wonders whether the programme set out in the Pope's letter on the millennium is not too vast: 'we should concentrate on bringing our own church communities into a closer relationship with the society to which we are historically related'.

The justice of the jubilee
Michael Czerny SJ
Michael Czerny, a Canadian Jesuit based in Rome, who is currently Secretary for Social Justice for the Jesuit order throughout the world, offers us a commentary on the Gospel encounter between Jesus and the Syro-Phoenician as a way of preparing us this Advent for the solemn Jubilee celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ two millennia ago.
